In Senegal, on a quarterly basis, fishing activity contracted by 5,5% in the second quarter of 2026, due to a decline in landings from its industrial component (-32,9%), despite the strong performance of the artisanal component (+5,4%). This information is provided by the Directorate of Forecasting and Economic Studies (DPEE), of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Cooperation.

Regarding artisanal fishing, the performance noted on a quarterly basis is supported by the good results of catches in the regions of Dakar (+10,6%), Thiès (+22,6%), Louga (+20,1%), Kaolack (+10,6%), and Fatick (+35,0%). In Dakar, Thiès, and Louga, the recorded performance is explained by favorable weather conditions, resulting in an increase in sea trips, and the opening of night fishing.

As for the Kaolack region, the temperature of the marine environment and the increase in salinity during this time of year were the factors behind the strong catch performance. Regarding the Fatick region, the increase in landings is a consequence of fishing effort and the opening of the nocturnal campaign.

Year-on-year, fishing activity strengthened slightly by 0,7% in the second quarter of 2026. Indeed, although artisanal fishing recorded a performance of 7,7%, industrial fishing declined by 39,8%.

The increase in artisanal fishing landings is the result of strengthened catches in the regions of Dakar (+26,7%), Thiès (+6,1%), Saint-Louis (+10,4%), Fatick (+12,4%), and Louga (+22,0%). These developments are explained by significant fishing efforts and the resumption of night fishing.

However, performance was dampened by the contraction of fishing catches in the regions of Ziguinchor (-13,9%) and Kaolack (-24,8%). The livestock sub-sector, for its part, strengthened by 1,2% in the second quarter of 2026, in quarterly variation, due to the increase in cattle (+2,1%), sheep (+4,3%), goat (+3,5%), camel (+7,4%), and backyard poultry (+1,5%) herds.

Year-on-year, the livestock sub-sector grew by 7,7% in the second quarter of 2026, due to the increase in cattle (+6,3%), sheep (+12,1%), goat (+14,6%), and camel (+3,6%) stocks, and the farming of backyard poultry (+2,9%) and industrial poultry (+2,8%).
