The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (OADA) have committed to strengthening their cooperation in support of the African agricultural sector. Both institutions have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at consolidating their collaboration in sustainable agricultural development and food security on the continent, states a note from the BADEA published this 5 October.

Signed by the President of the BADEA, Abdullah Khalil Al-Musayyibih, and the Director General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, Ibrahim Adam Ahmed Al-Dakhiri, the agreement intends to establish an institutional framework to better coordinate the interventions of both organizations, share their expertise, and support the African countries benefiting from the bank's programs more effectively.

This partnership aims in particular to pave the way for new joint initiatives in the agricultural sector, which is considered a major lever for food security and economic development in Africa. The BADEA thus plans to rely on this cooperation to implement new projects aimed at strengthening the sector's productive capacities, developing agricultural value chains, and improving the living conditions of the populations.

The new agreement further consolidates a cooperation already established between the two institutions. The BADEA had previously granted several subsidies to the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development in order to finance and implement various activities and initiatives falling within its areas of intervention.

The results obtained through these initial collaborations have contributed to strengthening trust between the two partners and to the emergence of new possibilities for cooperation. The memorandum of understanding now formalizes this dynamic and provides it with a framework allowing for the expansion of joint interventions.

Focusing on productivity and value chains

Beyond agricultural production, the partnership intends to act on several essential links of African rural development. This includes increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening value chains, developing the capacities of local communities, and fostering the emergence of more resilient agricultural systems.

For both institutions, the challenge is also to enable African communities to better cope with the economic, environmental, and climatic challenges that are increasingly affecting agricultural production systems.

This orientation comes at a time when agriculture remains a strategic sector for many African countries, both for employment, rural population income, food supply, and economic diversification. Strengthening productivity and local transformation thus appears as a means to reduce food vulnerabilities while creating more value on the continent.

For the BADEA, this agreement is part of a broader strategy to expand its partnerships with Arab, African, and international institutions. The objective is to mobilize more expertise and know-how in order to support the development priorities of African countries.
