Senegal adopts a green taxonomy. The launch is scheduled for 19 October 2026.

This initiative is led by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Planning, with technical support from the German Cooperation (GIZ). The Green Taxonomy of Senegal aims to establish a common language on sustainability, strengthen investor confidence, and mobilize capital toward ecological and viable projects.

Destined for governments, financial institutions, economic actors, and investors, this Taxonomy aims to provide a clear framework for evaluating and directing sustainable actions. In its current version, the Taxonomy focuses on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

It also integrates Minimum Social Safeguards (MSS), including a gender dimension that guarantees equitable access to resources for women and girls, evaluated according to the human rights charter and the standards of the IFC. Thus, in the current framework, for an activity, measure, or practice to be considered aligned with the Taxonomy, it must meet, according to Senegal's strategy, the mitigation of climate change, particularly in the Construction, Transport, Industry, Water, Sanitation-Waste, and Energy sectors.

The green taxonomy designed by Senegal also requires that it satisfies the mitigation criteria applicable to the relevant sector. For climate change adaptation, the substantial contribution can be achieved in two ways.

The first, inspired by the UE Taxonomy, is based on an approach rooted in a climate vulnerability and risk assessment process applicable to priority activities. The second option relies on the Climate Bonds Resilience Taxonomy (CBRT) and consists of implementing measures recognized as automatically eligible.

In the Agriculture sector, a distinct methodology is applied due to the heterogeneous nature of practices and their co-benefits for several environmental objectives of the Taxonomy. In this context, activities must not only demonstrate their alignment with one or more objectives but also guarantee DNSH compliance (Do No Significant Harm).

This is a regulatory mechanism of the European Union derived from the European taxonomy regulation and sustainable finance. Published on 19/10/26 08:52.
