Benin secures financial support of 326,06 million euros, or approximately 213,9 billion FCFA, from the Islamic Development Bank (BID) to support two projects related to road infrastructure and sustainable agriculture. The co-financing agreements were signed on the sidelines of the 2026 annual meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The largest portion of this package, valued at 306,89 million euros (195,4 billion FCFA), is allocated to the modernization of the Godomey-Ouidah-Hillacondji road corridor. This route is expected to contribute to streamlining travel and facilitating regional commercial exchanges.

Located in the south of the country, the corridor is of particular importance for the movement of goods and connections between Benin and neighboring countries. See also- The BID commits 200 million euros to modernize a strategic axis in northern Ivory Coast.

The second agreement concerns funding of 19,17 million euros (12,2 billion FCFA) dedicated to the development of sustainable agriculture based on legumes. The program aims specifically to improve soil fertility, strengthen food security, and increase the capacity of agricultural systems to withstand the effects of climate change.

It is part of a context where the preservation of arable land and the security of agricultural production are significant challenges for the economies of the region. These agreements were concluded following a meeting between Muhammad Al Jasser, President of the BID Group, and Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate to the Beninese Minister of Economy and Finance, in charge of External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two parties, particularly regarding development financing. Through these commitments, the BID continues its partnership with Benin by directing its resources toward investments likely to support commercial exchanges, agricultural production, and economic resilience.

The implementation of the projects should now allow these funds to be translated into tangible improvements for the populations and economic actors. Fanuelle YAO.
