In the month of August 2026, Senegal's exports stood at 711,1 billion FCFA compared to 668,2 billion FCFA the previous month, representing an increase of 6,4%. According to the ANSD, this rise is mainly explained by the strengthening of shipments of refined petroleum products (95,3 billion FCFA in the month of August 2026 compared to 73,0 billion FCFA the previous month), phosphoric acid (40,7 billion FCFA compared to 19,7 billion FCFA), and phosphates (6,7 billion FCFA compared to 2,3 billion FCFA).
However, the decline in exports of crude oil (206,7 billion FCFA compared to 273,4 billion FCFA) and non-monetary gold (109,8 billion FCFA compared to 124,7 billion FCFA) moderated this growth. Compared to the month of August 2025, exports increased by 75,7%.
Their cumulative total as of end-August 2026 reached 4 533,6 billion FCFA compared to 3 676,8 billion FCFA for the same period of 2025, representing an increase of 23,3%. During the month of August 2026, the main products exported were crude oil (206,7 billion FCFA), non-monetary gold (109,8 billion FCFA), refined petroleum products (95,3 billion FCFA), phosphoric acid (40,7 billion FCFA), and liquefied natural gas (28,4 billion FCFA).
The main clients of Senegal during the period under review were Mali (29,7%), the Netherlands (20,4%), Switzerland (15,9%), Italy (9,4%), India (7,2%), and the People's Republic of China (2,5%). Decline 9% in imports.
Imports of goods in the month of August 2026 amounted to 551,1 billion FCFA compared to 606,0 billion FCFA the previous month, a contraction of 9,1%. This trend stems from the decrease in external purchases of crude petroleum oil (almost no imports in the month of August 2026 compared to 112,3 billion FCFA the previous month), other transport equipment (11,8 billion FCFA compared to 50,1 billion FCFA), and refined petroleum products (170,5 billion FCFA compared to 207,1 billion FCFA).
However, the strengthening of external purchases of base metals (38,9 billion compared to 5,3 billion FCFA the previous month) and pharmaceutical products (18,2 billion FCFA compared to 5,3 billion FCFA) moderated this decline. Compared to the month of August 2025, imports showed an increase of 6,5%.
Their cumulative total as of end-August 2026 reached 4 440,6 billion FCFA compared to 4 721,9 billion FCFA for the same period of 2025, representing a decrease of 6,0%. The main products imported during the period under review were refined petroleum products (170,5 billion FCFA), base metals (38,9 billion FCFA), other machines and apparatus (37,3 billion FCFA), pharmaceutical products (18,2 billion FCFA), and wheat and meslin (17,2 billion FCFA).
The main suppliers of Senegal in the month of August 2026 were Nigeria (22,7%), the People's Republic of China (21,0%), France (12,9%), the Republic of Georgia (7,5%), the United States of America (6,4 %), and Spain (4,4%). The trade balance strengthens.
In the month of August 2026, the trade balance surplus strengthened, reaching +160,0 billion FCFA compared to +62,1 billion FCFA the previous month. This growth is explained by an improvement in the balance with Mali (+211,0 billion FCFA compared to +78,2 billion FCFA the previous month), the Netherlands (+139,8 billion FCFA compared to +44,6 billion FCFA), Italy (+62,3 billion FCFA compared to -3,5 billion FCFA), and Nigeria (-12,4 billion FCFA compared to -136,5 billion FCFA).
On the other hand, the widening of the deficit with France (-67,9 billion FCFA compared to -19,2 billion FCFA the previous month), the People's Republic of China (-97,7 billion FCFA compared to -51,7 billion FCFA), and the Republic of Georgia (-41,5 billion FCFA compared to -23,6 billion FCFA) mitigated this growth. The cumulative balance as of end-August 2026 stood at +93,0 billion FCFA compared to -1 045,0 billion FCFA for the same period in 2025.
