The Chinese group SFQ Global, listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, has been awarded a 41,4 million USD contract for the construction of a solar photovoltaic energy production facility coupled with an energy storage system in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC).

Announced on 21 October 2026 in a statement released on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the contract will be executed by its subsidiary SFQ HuanYu Limited. The project site, the plant's capacity, and the client's identity were not disclosed.

The contract is divided into two phases, valued at 22,3 million USD and 19,1 million USD respectively. It covers engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services, encompassing the entire project implementation process.

According to the company, the works include design, equipment procurement, transportation, construction, installation, grid connection, testing, and facility maintenance.

Congolese electricity deficit sharpens demand

This contract comes against a backdrop of a structural electricity deficit in RDC, where energy access remains limited despite the country's abundant hydroelectric resources. According to World Bank data, the electricity access rate reached only 21,5% in 2024.

An estimate published in September 2026 puts the number of people still without electricity at approximately 80 million.

Yet, the Congolese energy potential is significant. Data from the Electricity Regulatory Authority indicates a production of 16 451 GWh in 2025, of which approximately 15 362 GWh was of hydroelectric origin.

Conversely, solar production, estimated at nearly 384 GWh, remains marginal. The reported installed electrical capacity amounted to 4 133 MW.

This supply insufficiency also weighs on industrial activities, particularly in the mining provinces of Lualaba and Haut-Katanga. According to Climate Home News, the electricity deficit in the mining sector is estimated at approximately 1 000 MW.

To ensure the continuity of their operations, some companies are forced to import electricity, notably from Zambia, or resort to diesel-powered generators.

In response to these needs, solar installations coupled with storage systems represent a solution to diversify supply sources and improve electricity availability. The RDC already has projects of this scale, such as the Kamoa-Kakula solar and storage complex, located near Kolwezi and inaugurated on 16 October 2026.

Valued at 522 million USD, this project combines approximately 433 MW of photovoltaic capacity with 1 107 MWh of storage. It is designed to provide 60 MW of continuous electricity to this copper operation.

Formerly known as Rimbaco Group Global Limited, SFQ Global seeks to develop its activities in infrastructure related to renewable energy and to expand its geographic footprint, particularly in Asian and African markets. The contract secured in RDC represents a new step in this diversification strategy.
