The West African Development Bank (BOAD) is providing financial support for the construction of 420 social and economic housing units in Yamoussoukro, the Ivorian political and administrative capital, as part of an emergency program of 25 000 housing units initiated by the authorities. With a cost of over 13,5 billion FCFA, the project aims to strengthen the supply of affordable housing in the capital.
The construction site was officially launched on 1 October, in the presence of the Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé. The project will be carried out over an area of approximately 3 hectares, in the Morofé Résidentiel district, near the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.
The program includes the construction of 21 R+4 type buildings, for a total of 420 apartments. The offer will be distributed equally between 210 three-room apartments and 210 four-room apartments.
The housing units are intended to be marketed through two mechanisms: rent-to-own and standard rental. This formula is intended to broaden access to housing for different household profiles, taking into account their financial capabilities.
Ultimately, the project is expected to house 420 families, while contributing to the structuring of residential supply in a city that concentrates several administrative and institutional functions of the country. For the BOAD, this financing also reinforces its involvement in funding infrastructure and facilities contributing to urban development and the improvement of living conditions within the UEMOA area. With this investment, the operation also represents a significant volume of expenditure in the construction sector, with expected benefits for BTP companies and the various trades involved in the project's execution.
The work is expected to last 36 months before the housing units are made available to beneficiaries. The authorities have emphasized the need to respect contractual deadlines as well as the quality standards provided for the project.
The stated ambition is to build residential complexes that are properly integrated into their environment and offer future occupants a suitable living environment. The design in the form of apartment buildings notably allows for optimizing the use of land available on the site of nearly three hectares.
Beyond the construction of new housing, the operation therefore reflects the desire to develop a residential offer better adapted to the financial capacities of households, in accordance with the guidelines adopted as part of the national program. It should be noted that beyond Yamoussoukro, the BOAD's commitment is extended to a series of interventions with the construction of a total of 2 360 housing units in Abidjan, already underway, and 1 520 in Bouaké.
