The Italian energy group Eni claims to have reached a production of 170 000 barrels per day in Congo, according to statements made by its CEO, Claudio Descalzi, following a meeting with President Denis Sassou N'Guesso on October 9, 2026. The executive also announced an increase in the group's gas production, confirming the Republic of the Congo's significance in its oil and gas operations in Central Africa.

These statements were released by the Congolese presidential press office. This ramp-up supports the development of the Congo LNG project, the second phase of which commenced commercial exports in February 2026.

According to data published by Eni, the two floating liquefaction units now have a total capacity of 3 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year. The project relies primarily on resources from the Nene and Litchendjili offshore fields, located within the Marine XII permit.

Concurrently, Eni is evaluating an increase in the Djeno power generation capacity. The proposed project plans for an initial extension to 600 MW, followed by a capacity that could reach 1 000 MW.

This strategic direction would bolster the group's activities in electricity generation from natural gas, as the power plants supplied by Eni already hold a significant position in the Congolese electricity system. The group is also working with the Ministry of Energy on the rehabilitation of the Djeno-Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville power line.

This program concerns transportation infrastructure intended to transmit electricity between production zones and major consumption centers. The development of the grid is intended to support the planned investments in power generation capacities.

Regarding the oil sector, Claudio Descalzi announced the continuation of seismic studies on the Marine XXIV offshore block, with exploration work planned for 2027. The Council of Ministers on October 7 further approved the modification of the perimeter of this permit operated by Eni Congo, to account for the boundaries of the Conkouati-Douli National Park.

This decision establishes a new geographical framework for the group's activities in this maritime zone. Published on 19/10/26 09:54 The Editorial Staff
