In Senegal, the Directorate of Forecasting and Economic Studies (DPEE) has published its Household Conjuncture Perception Survey (EPCM). It highlights, in the second quarter of 2026, an increase in food expenditures for more than two-thirds of the households surveyed (87,9%).
Electricity expenditures also increased for 50,7% of the respondents. Expenses related to health, education, and transportation remained stable for 52,2%, 77,0%, and 46,2% of households, respectively.
Regarding the economic situation and outlook, the DPEE explains that household perception regarding their future standard of living (-2,3 points) remains negative over the period. It should also be noted, according to the Directorate of Forecasting and Economic Studies (DPEE), that their perception of their financial situation remains negative compared to the first quarter of 2026.
Concerning the financial situation of households in the second quarter of 2026, opinion balances relating to their current and future savings capacities deteriorated by 7,5 and 10,4 points, respectively, in quarterly variation. Household opinion on the suitability of making major purchases also deteriorated during this quarter by 1,5 point.
Regarding the economic situation of the country, household opinions were relatively positive in the second quarter of 2026. Indeed, the balance corresponding to their current standard of living increased by 9,0 points.
Concerns regarding a potential rise in unemployment also decreased, as their corresponding balance increased by 14,8 points. In the second quarter of 2026, the DPEE also highlights that household confidence has slightly improved.
The synthetic indicator shows an increase of 2,9 points, on a quarterly basis, while remaining well below its long-term average. A resurgence of household confidence in the country's economic situation is observed.
From the perspective of access to essential needs, the DPEE highlights that most households in Dakar have access to drinking water (98,7%) and electricity (97,7%). Sanitation remained moderately accessible (35,7% of households).
The average school enrollment rate for children over six years old in Dakar stands at 93,4% (95,4% in average families versus 90,3% in large families). The proportion of households with children under 18 years of age who work is 2,9% (1,7% for average families versus 7,7% in large families).
