The Orange group is seeking to expand its presence on the African continent by negotiating the acquisition of Telecel Ghana. Already established in 18 countries across Africa and the Middle East, the French operator is thus initiating a strategic move into English-speaking Africa.

According to several reports revealed at the beginning of October 2026, informal discussions have reportedly been underway for several months to acquire the 70% stake held by the Telecel group. The financial transaction would allow Orange to secure a key player in the Ghanaian telecommunications sector.

The State of Ghana, currently a minority shareholder with a 30% stake, maintains a central role in the outcome of this project. Consequently, the final transaction remains strictly conditioned on the explicit approval of the Ghanaian authorities and the State.

This acquisition would represent an investment estimated at approximately 500 million euros. This amount is part of a broader plan aimed at strengthening the group's international operations.

By finalizing this acquisition, Orange would immediately integrate nearly 9 million new customers into its network. This operation is directly aligned with the objectives set by its Trust the Future strategic plan, which targets the gain of 40 million additional customers by 2028.

Currently, Telecel Ghana is preparing the launch of its own 5G network by December 2026 following the recent allocation of new frequencies by local regulatory authorities. Establishing a presence in Ghana would therefore offer Orange a significant growth vector in a rapidly expanding local market.

Financial and regulatory negotiations between the various parties are expected to continue until the end of 2026. Anselme Akéko Published on 09/10/26 08:43 The Editorial Staff
