Ghana has approved the principle of filing a formal application to join BRICS, a group of emerging powers that has considerably expanded its scope in recent years. The announcement was made this 6 October by the Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on the occasion of the visit to Ghana of his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, according to sources consulted by Sika Finance.
Accra has already requested the support of New Delhi to back its bid. For this West African country, this move is primarily a response to a desire to increase economic cooperation levers and reduce its dependence on traditional partners.
The Ghanaian government intends, in particular, to leverage new trade, investment, and cooperation opportunities with emerging economies. An economic stake for Accra.
For Ghana, the interest in joining BRICS goes beyond the diplomatic dimension alone. Accra could seek to increase its trade with several major emerging economies, attract more capital, and develop new partnerships in strategic sectors.
This orientation comes as the country seeks to consolidate its economic trajectory and strengthen its room for maneuver in an international environment marked by the reconfiguration of trade and investment flows. A potential membership would also allow the country to strengthen its presence within the 'Global South' cooperation mechanisms, while potentially opening new channels of dialogue with some of the planet's leading emerging economies.
However, the Ghanaian process remains at an early stage. Following the official submission of the application, it will have to be reviewed by all BRICS members.
India's support constitutes a first favorable signal, but does not prejudge the outcome of the process. It should be noted that the group is undergoing a significant phase of expansion.
Created in 2009 around Brazil, Russia, India, and China, then joined by South Africa, the bloc has gradually opened up to other emerging economies and Global South countries. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates are among the new members, while Indonesia has also joined the group as part of its expansion.
This momentum enhances the forum's attractiveness for countries wishing to diversify their economic and diplomatic relations. Published on 07/10/26 11:12.
